Mid morning voting in the Marriaqua Valley at Richland Park

As Vincentians enter the final hour of voting in their historic Referendum, voting is expected to pick up as merchants allowed employees to leave work at 2:30 this afternoon.

This morning began with light showers which threatened for most of the morning but large numbers turned up at 7 am to cast their ballot which would decide whether the newly proposed Constitution would be adopted as law in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

By mid morning the numbers who turned up early had fallen to a steady trickle and the weather turned hot and steamy as the afternoon progressed.

It was clear that the dynamics were very different to voting in a general election, why loyalty to a particular candidate drives the voting.

The campaign which preceded today’s vote was vigorous and contentious and the outcome is being waiting with bated breath in many quarters.

The Opposition New Democratic Party led a campaign which advised persons to vote no, while the governing Unity Labour Party allocated $4-million to secure a yes vote.

Vote counting is expected to take place as soon as the polls closes at 5 pm.
