KINGSTOWN, St Vincent, – Voters who wish to participate in the November 25 national referendum for a new constitution for St. Vincent and the Grenadines have been told that they have less than three weeks to ensure that their names appear on the official list.
“Please note that the Electoral Office is not allowed by law to make changes or additions to the voters list after November 16, 2009,” said the Supervisor of Elections, Sylvia Findlay, reminding voters that they must also produce a national form of identification in order to cast a ballot in the referendum to replace the 30-year old constitution.
The Electoral Office Friday took out advertisements in the newspapers here outlining the guidelines for citizens ahead of the referendum that Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves said provide citizens with an opportunity of adopting a constitution “shaped by their own hands over a seven-year period in a thoroughly extensive and intensive way, never witnessed hitherto, anywhere, in the process of constitution- making”.
Gonsalves told a public rally here on Thursday night that there is growing interest regionally and internationally in the referendum and that he would be addressing a conference in Trinidad next week on comparative constitutions.
“I am getting letters from leaders, intellectuals and scholars all over the world…telling me how brave and magnificent are the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to be doing what they are going to do on November 25,” he said.
But the main opposition National Democratic Party (NDP), which is urging citizens to vote against the measure, has accused the government of using State resources to finance its campaign.
