General elections in Dominica to elect a new government would be held on December 18.
This was announced by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerritt at a mass rally held in Mauhaut,
a village just outside capital city Roseau in what was announced as an address to the nation in which it was widely speculated that the general elections date would be announced.
“I am tonight ringing the bell…Ladies and gentlemen,” the Prime Minister said, “the day we shall choose between going forward and going backward, the day we shall choose to work together or be divided, the day we shall choose to embrace current foreign policy, or return to a backward non-progressive way of thinking: that day, that day my dear people is Friday the 18th day of December, 2009. Friday, 18th December, 2009 shall be election day in Dominica!… We must ensure at all costs that we have a peaceful election.”
“I am confident that you the good people of Dominica will return the DLP with a resounding landslide victory…”
He continued, “Fellow Dominicans at home and abroad, nomination day in Dominica will be the 2nd day of December 2009.
The DLP won 12 seats in the last general election held on May 5, 2005, while the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) won eight seats. The other seat was won by an independent candidate.
